Ever since the lockdown was announced, alcohol consumption took a big hit and so did state revenues linked to alcohol sales. However, it looks like our troubles will soon go away, as Amazon India has secured clearance to deliver alcohol, according to a report by Reuters

Amazon Food was to be launched in February, but was delayed due to coronavirus. It is delivering essentials through Amazon Pantry. It offers essentials like groceries, food items, health and beauty items, beverages, etc. Amazon also delivers food delivery items that include ready-to-eat meals through Amazon Prime Now and Amazon Fresh.

Other services like Swiggy, Zomato, BigBasket and Grofers went big on essential item delivery in the backdrop of the pandemic.

Alcohol consumption took a big hit ever since the lockdown was announced . However, it looks like our troubles will soon go away, as Amazon India has secured clearance to deliver alcohol in West Bengal, according to a report by Reuters. Reuters has come across a document that signals the e-commerce giant’s entry in delivering alcohol to people’s homes.

This permission was granted by West Bengal State Beverages Corp. Amazon has also been called to sign a memorandum of understanding with the state of West Bengal, according to a notice.

What’s surprising is that Amazon was not the only one in the queue to get this clearance. Online groceries platform BigBasket was also one of the players who received the clearance to sell alcohol in the state online.

Not the only ones- there’s more

Amazon and BigBasket aren’t the first ones to be selling alcohol online. Food and delivery apps, Swiggy and Zomato both started delivering alcohol in some states like Jharkhand, dealing with high demands amidst lockdown.

Swiggy has a new category called Wine Shops from where customers can order liquor at home.

"By enabling home delivery of alcohol in a safe and responsible manner, we can generate additional business for retail outlets while solving the problem of overcrowding, thereby promoting social distancing." Anuj Rathi, VP-Products in a statement said.

Customers ordering alcohol have to verify their age and user authentication with their selfie and government ID card. There will also be a cap on the quantity of alcohol that can be delivered.

Will this be available across the nation?

Not for now! Since every Indian state has its own liquor sales policies as of now, only a few states have started inviting companies to accept electronic orders for alcohol. If all goes well, we could soon expect this to surface in other states of our nation.
